Why is my Google Ads campaign not converting?

Clicks are coming in, but the phone isn't ringing and the form isn't filling up. Here's what's usually behind it, in order of how often we see it.

In short

Clicks without conversions almost always come down to one of three things: broken conversion tracking, keywords that attract the wrong intent, or a landing page that doesn't deliver what the ad promised. Fix these in order, they're listed by how often they're the real cause.

1. Conversion tracking is broken or incomplete

Before assuming the campaign is the problem, check whether Google Ads can even see your real conversions. It's common for a tag to fire on the wrong page, count a page view as a sale, or simply never have been installed on the confirmation page at all. Compare what Google Ads reports against your actual sales or calls for the same week. If the numbers don't line up, the campaign may be working fine, it's the measurement that's broken.

2. The keywords bring visitors, not buyers

A word like "plumbing" pulls in people researching, comparing, or looking for a DIY fix, alongside the ones ready to hire someone today. Broad keywords without enough negative keywords quietly drain a budget on clicks that were never going to convert. Terms with real buying intent, "emergency plumber near me" instead of "plumbing", cost more per click but convert at a much higher rate.

3. The landing page doesn't match the ad

Someone clicks an ad about a specific offer, and lands on a generic homepage with no trace of what they searched for. That mismatch alone kills a large share of otherwise good traffic. A slow page, a form with too many fields, or no clear next step do the same damage. The click already cost money, the landing page is what decides whether it turns into anything.
