How much should a small business budget for Google Ads?

There's no universal number. Here's how to size a budget around your actual cost per click and how many leads you need.

In short

Work backward from your average cost per click and the number of leads you need per month. A business needing 30 leads a month with a 5% landing page conversion rate needs 600 clicks, multiplied by the cost per click in that industry, that's the realistic monthly figure, not a round number picked out of habit.

Why "spend what you can afford" is bad advice

A budget set by comfort rather than by the math of clicks-to-leads either wastes money on more clicks than the business can follow up with, or spreads too thin to generate enough data in any single keyword to know what's working. The right number comes from the outcome you need, not from what feels safe to spend.

Concentration beats spreading thin

A modest budget concentrated on the ten keywords that most directly describe what a business sells will nearly always outperform the same budget spread across a hundred loosely related terms. Focus produces enough volume per keyword to actually learn something, which is what eventually lowers cost per lead over time.
